Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Cafe Altura different?
Cafe Altura was started in 1980 when the viability of organic companies and the nation’s interest in organic products was still unknown. Cafe Altura was founded to support the principles of organic farming – sustainability, living wages for farmers and stewardship of some of the worlds most verdant and beautiful landscapers – and to provide an avenue for the quality organic beans to reach the U.S. marketplace. Cafe Altura has remained small in both production capacity and management style to ensure that these concepts remain guiding principles.

Is Cafe Altura a shade grown coffee?
Yes. The shading of the delicate Arabica coffee trees is an important element in the organic management of the coffee farms. The Ecosystem in and around the trees, such as, birds and insects, as well as, the micro level biodiversity in the soil beneath, all benefit from having native trees in the system. As consumers, we see a benefit from the longer ripening times of the cherries providing a more complex flavor.

Do you roast your own coffee?
Yes. We roast and package Cafe Altura in an Organic Certified roasting facility in Ventura, California. All of our coffees are small batch roasted to ensure cup quality and integrity. Our coffees are roasted to order and Cafe Altura maintains minimal standing inventory of coffees roasted only days before.

Who certifies your coffee as organically grown?
The Demeter Association has been certifying Cafe Altura since 1982. They have recently started a subsidiary called Stellar, which certifies Cafe Altura as organic today. The Demeter association is a national, independent, non-profit, non-tax exempt corporation committed to assuring that Biodynamic and Organic products in the United States and Mexico are grown with the highest integrity and care. The Demeter standards of evaluation are used world wide. The association oversees the production and processing of labeled products by enlisting the services of consultants in a program of annual written reports of farm and processing facilities. The consultants are approved by the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association of Kimberton, Pennsylvania.

How long have you been in business?
Clean Foods Inc. began in 1980. We were the first company to import organically grown coffee in the United States. We were also the first company to have independent third party certification.

What type of package should I buy my coffee in?
Convenience: Pre-ground vacuum canned coffee for those on the go.
Price: 4 or 5 lb. Bulk whole bean coffee vacuum-sealed.
Most Consumers: Cafe Altura’s whole bean, 2lb, vacuum-sealed bags afford consumers the opportunity to taste Cafe Altura at its best. The whole bean vacuum pack is packed the day it’s roasted and is protected from oxygen until the day it is opened by the consumer. The choice is preferable to canned coffee because the beans have not been ground and will be fresher than the bulk.

What does M.W.P. mean when used along with the word decaffeination?
M.W.P. stands for Mountain Water Process decaffeination. Mountain Water Process decaffeination is decaffeination without chemicals and is done using only fresh spring water and a series of filtration steps to remove the caffeine. The process is certified organic with the same regulations as the coffee Cafe Altura sends in for processing.

How much caffeine does Cafe Altura have? How much caffeine is left after decaffeination?
Café Altura coffee uses only Arabica beans. When brewed Arabica coffee contains between 75 and 130 mg of caffeine per 6 ounce cup. The Mountain Water Decaffeination process removes 99% of that 75 to 130 milligrams using only purified mountain water and an elaborate filtration process. The decaffeination process is certified organic by the OCIA.

What is Kona Blend?
Kona Blend is 20% Kona from Hawaii, 80% Mexican coffee.

Is Cafe Altura high in acid or acid free?
Cafe Altura is a high grown Arabica coffee. Coffee grown in altitudes of 1,000 or more meters will be naturally lower in acids than coffee grown at lower altitudes. This high grown coffee is also more flavorful and gives brightness to the flavor. A darker roast coffee will be lower in acid content as it burns out most of the chemicals which cause the acid sensation. Preparing coffee with a coffee “Toddy” takes most of the acid from the ground coffee as it filters out the acid. If acid free coffee is needed, this type of preparation is preferable.

Is it the acid that makes my stomach hurt?
When coffee is brewed and left on a hot plate (burner) for more than twenty minutes, the liquid will concentrate the acids in the coffee. This may contribute to stomach discomfort. Try storing freshly brewed coffee in an airpot or thermos.
