Enema Coffee & The Gerson Institute
Every day over 27,000 tons of coffee are consumed worldwide in all manner of ways. For some it’s a way of socializing with friends, for others it’s a customary part of a meal and for many it’s a core part of their morning routine. While people may have their differing ways of incorporating the drink into their daily routine, there’s one thing they’d pretty much all agree on. That is-coffee is best experienced when conveyed from cup to mouth. However this isn’t the only way people incorporate the benefits of coffee in to their daily lives. Though they may not be as their cup-based counterparts, coffee enemas are used by many as a regular part of alternative therapies throughout the world.
Though rectal cleansing has been practiced since the times of the Ancient Egyptians, this specific iteration of the protocol was popularized in the early 1900’s by Dr. Max Gerson.
Initially known for his early-career work with nutrition-based approaches to disease management with skin tuberculosis and type II diabetes patients. Dr. Gerson’s focus on diet was part of his larger focus on non-toxic medicines and alternative, holistic treatment methods. While his methods were not the norm in his day, they did prove successful. Under his care, 99% of patients recovered from the effects of their skin tuberculosis by adhering to his dietary principles.
Dr. Gerson and his therapy have since evolved under the non-profit Gerson Institute to include a diet centered around organic, plant-based foods, raw juices, natural supplements and coffee enemas. It is a protocol focused on riding the body of toxins, overcoming nutritional deficiencies, and enabling patient’s bodies to heal themselves.
Coffee therapy, probably the most eye-catching component of the Gerson methodology, was developed by Dr. Gerson as a result of looking for ways to help patients flush toxins out of their system while re-activating their liver. Not only is the therapy effective in clearing up blockages and avoiding autointoxication, but Dr. Gerson discovered that coffee therapy held a few distinct advantages over similar treatments with saline solutions as well.
By using coffee instead of a saline solution, Dr. Gerson found that the liquid was better able to travel up the smooth muscle of the small intestine and into the liver. He found this coffee therapy to activate the autonomic nervous system in a similar way to oral caffeine consumption, but with the added benefits of releasing bile in the liver, clearing a greater portion of the gastrointestinal tract and more effectively removing toxins.
Dr. Gerson was mainly focused on this therapy’s ability, according to his research, to activate the liver to both expel current toxin as well as produce bile and increased levels of glutathione s transferase. Bile helps to digest fats, particularly those coming from animal proteins. Glutathione s transferase causes the body to produce more glutathione antioxidant, further detoxifying the liver and body while working to stave off degenerative diseases as well.
With many of his patients either undergoing, or recovering from, intensive treatment, Dr. Gerson’s concern that the liver had been overloaded led him to incorporating these practices as part of his prescribed recovery process.
In present day the Gerson Institute operates throughout the world with physical practice locations in Mexico and Europe. The Gerson Institute, along with its licensed practitioners, have been credited by thousands with helping them overcome everything from migraine headaches to heart disease, all the way to cancer.
Even with thousands of adherents throughout the world, it is important to keep in mind this protocol is not for everyone and isn’t without drawbacks. Those with caffeine sensitivities or taking medication that would interact with caffeine should not undergo this treatment. People currently undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients and those with severe liver damage are also poor candidates for the practice. Additionally, it is possible to injure yourself with improper administering of the treatment so it is advisable to go through a trained professional until you fully understand the safest techniques.
Best practices with Coffee Therapy call for using only non-GMO and Organic products so as to be counter-productive toward the detoxifying goals. Before undertaking Gerson Therapy yourself it is important to consult your doctor to ensure your medical history and any medications your taking don’t make you a poor candidate for the practice.
